Ilya Lichtenstein, involved in the 2016 Bitfinex cryptocurrency hack, was sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering. He was released early in 2025 under the First Step Act, a U.S. criminal justice reform law. Lichtenstein and his wife, Heather Morgan, pleaded guilty in 2023 to stealing over 119,754 Bitcoin from Bitfinex. The couple exploited a vulnerability in Bitfinex's withdrawal system and used mixing services to launder the funds. Morgan was released earlier in 2025 after serving 18 months.
