浙江大学启动了世界最大的超重力实验装置。地球表面的任何物体都会受到地球重力的作用。科学家把地球上的重力叫做常重力，用1g（重力单位）来表示，大于1个g的就叫超重力。比如航天员乘坐飞船返回地球时，会受到4个g的超重力，相当于承受了4个自己的重量。在超重力环境下，会发生一些神奇效应。因为这些神奇效应，科学家们可以完成很多在常重力环境中难以完成的实验。超重具有“缩尺”作用，如了解 100 层楼对地基的影响，只需要造 1 层楼模型将其放在 100 个g 的超重力作用下；超重力场中还存在“缩时”效应，可以在短时间内模拟长时间的影响。世界上离心机最大容量为1200g·t（重力加速度×吨），浙江大学的超重力离心模拟与实验装置（CHIEF）达到了 1900g·t。

抗生素耐药性正日益成为一个严重的健康问题。每年有逾百万人死于耐药性感染，预计到 2050 年死亡人数将会达到两百万。根据发表在《Science Advances》期刊上的一项研究，加州圣迭戈的研究人员找到了耐药菌的一个致命弱点，可能有助于抑制抗生素耐药性的形成。研究团队调查了名为枯草芽孢杆菌(Bacillus subtilis)的常见细菌，观察为何耐药菌株相对于非耐药菌株并不能占据优势。研究人员发现，耐药菌细胞必需成分核糖体对矿物质镁异常贪婪，而 ATP 分子也亟需镁，这导致了双方对有限的资源展开了激烈内部竞争，最终导致耐药细菌有着较低的生长和传播率。这一发现提出了一种不使用传统抗生素对抗耐药菌的新方法。科学家可通过操纵细菌环境中的镁含量，在不伤害有益菌的情况下阻断耐药菌。
